19th century emigration of an old father (Lassefar) and son of a dozen years, from Sweden to Denmark.'s father promises to son of decent living conditions. The reality unfortunately is very different from what they expected, but hired Lassefar thinks he is relegated to the barn most of the time they reach the corner accommodate the home is not as hoped. They know eventually the same insecurity as before in Sweden, the popular hostility against immigrants as a further test. The son Pelle has many difficulties in being accepted at school but when his old father intends to live with a woman in the country which no one is sure if it is really a widow, he spent the "status" of "redneck hick" than the plague. The situation became unbearable to him, he is left with no other conclusion that the departure to the wider world.
